EMQ’s with DARK SERENITY

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Michigan based Hard Rock band Dark Serenity! Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
We are Dark Serenity. Kate Emrich is on guitar and vocals, Zachary Barnes is on bass, and Michael Bergamo is on drums. We met back in high school and started writing in Kate’s house’s basement after class. The project grew and we started gigging shortly after.
How did you come up with your band name?
The name Dark Serenity means “the driving force for life is death”, so one can find motivation and purpose from having a limited lifespan.
What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
America, There are lots of different types of metal throughout the country and every big city has its own new style of metal that is in its live scene. We see more Metalcore in general in Michigan, however, than any other genre, so we are certainly outnumbered in that sense.
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)?
Our latest release has been our debut album “Memento Mori”. We are currently working on our second album.
Who have been your greatest influences?
For Kate, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath has been her primary influence. For Mike, Dave Grohl was his initial and biggest influence. For Zach, Geddy Lee of Rush!
What first got you into music?
Each one of us heard a lot of the music that inspired us growing up from our families playing it around us. Then as we got older we explored like bands in the genres we had grown up with, and expanded our own tastes.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Our buds out in L.A., Void Vator! Wonderful guys with a stellar sound and energy.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
We would make our own festival in the Roman coliseum. It would be one of the biggest shows ever, and a fantastic venue.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
We have yet to receive a weird gift from a fan, but we have received some great ones. Recently we had a fan give Kate a guitar after a show, it was pretty heartfelt.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Do what you love and don’t look back.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Jim Morrison, because he would have kept on pushing boundaries musically! We think it would have been interesting to see where else he went.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
We love the enjoyment of playing live shows and recording the most. It’s a great feeling to do both of those things because they validate our intense efforts. One thing that we hate is that people don’t take bands seriously. People love to simultaneously indulge in the arts and shun the people that create them.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Change the royalty system. Musicians are working harder than ever with less return than ever and it needs to be fixed.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Texas Flood”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl is by far the best audio quality and is timeless. It’s wonderful to have music in a tangible form so that you can value it more.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Playing with the Iron Maidens in Detroit! The venue was practically beyond capacity and the energy was incredible.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
We would be better musicians.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
We’re going for eccentrics. Hunter S. Thompson, Joe Rogan, Joey Diaz, John Lennon, and Lemmy would all make for an eventful occasion.
What’s next for the band?
Finish up our first tour, go home and finish writing our next album so we can move on to the recording process.
